I'm a writer and photographer based in Newport, Wales, working across criticism and image-making.
From 2015 to 2018, I was Editor of It's Nice That, where I worked on coverage of visual culture for a global readership. I later served as Chief Digital Officer at Magnum Photos. Before that, I wrote architecture and design criticism for Blueprint, Icon Magazine, and The Architects' Journal, and exhibited as part of the team at the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale in the British Pavilion.
My photography looks at culture, landscape, and communities. Gravity explores the sculptural qualities of the human form. Horse Gang documents the wild ponies of Worm's Head in Gower. Only Vans traces 25 years of returning to a caravan park, revealing the vernacular and signs of life in corrugated metal homes facing the sea. Tenby captures the fortress-harbour-resort contradictions of a Welsh seaside town. Small Boats pays quiet tribute to Cwmbran Modelling Club and their Sunday gatherings at the boating lake.
Reading Photographs is a critical blog where I examine images I return to. Some are famous, others less so. What matters is that they hold something I haven't exhausted: a formal decision, a political context, a moment of human drama that refuses to settle into easy interpretation. Each piece works through what I see, why a particular image stays with me, and what I think it reveals about the world it was made in.
